The different types of kayak to choose from include ocean or sea kayaks, whitewater kayaks, recreational kayaks and inflatable kayak. Before you buy a kayak you will need to think carefully about where you will be using it so that you purchase a suitable type. We’ve put together a guide of the different kayak types to help you decide which one will be more suitable for you.
Recreational Kayaks
If you are a beginner recreational kayak is probably the best for you start out with. They are the most widely used kayaks and suitable for a wide range of activities. There are huge range of recreational kayaks to choose from but most very stable and usually between about nine and 13 feet long. They are designed to be easy to use that they’re not suitable if you are going to go whitewater kayaking or for use in the ocean. Some recreational kayaks are designed to be used for long distances and have larger cargo capacities for storing camping and other gear. Recreational kayaks designed for day trips are similar but have less storage capacity. These types of kayaks can be made of a variety of different materials including fiberglass and plastic so it might be a good idea before you buy to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of these types of materials.
Ocean or Sea Kayaks
Ocean kayaks are narrower at the tip and wider and longer in the middle to help stability. The narrow tip is designed like a keel in a more
conventional boat, to help tracking, stability and plowing through the waves. they are fast moving in a straight line as they go farther her stroke than other kayaks but their width makes them less maneuverable. The stability and control may also be improved by using a road or skeg. They also have lots of cargo space and can be bought as single or tandem designs. You can also find ’sit on top’ sea kayaks other more conventional ’sit inside’ kayaks.
Whitewater Kayaks
Whitewater kayaks are much more maneuverable and other types, are shorter and made to be more durable further then not damaged during whitewater rapid use. They are usually between eight and 9 feet long and have rounded hulls with minimal flare. They are designed to be maneuverable so that they can perform rolls and tricks so they have less contact with the water and most other kayaks and they do not have rudders. For whitewater kayaking you obviously need a ’sit inside’ model.
Inflatable Kayaks
Inflatable kayaks are very popular and much more sturdy than the name might suggest. They are very easy to store and transport, some being small enough when uninflated to carry around in a backpack or even take them on a plane. They are very buoyant and very good for beginners as the buoyancy helps to keep them upright. of course, one disadvantage is that you would need to inflate them before use that this is fairly easy to do. Overall inflatable kayaks are very convenient, so don’t be put off by thinking that they are like toys! They are serious, easy-to-use kayaks suitable for many different situations.
