Inflatable kayaks can be great fun, are easy to store and transport and can be used in various types of water. They are also very stable and buoyant so they stay upright easily, which makes them ideal for the beginner. You can use them in calm water, in the surf even on whitewater so they are extremely versatile.

Care and Maintenance of Inflatable Kayaks

Storing Your Inflatable Kayak

For storing your kayak for a few days make sure it is deflated and has no water inside then put it away safely. For longer term storage more care is required. It is best to store it only partially deflated and somewhere out of the sun, which will degrade the plastic material. If you store your kayak completely deflated and rolled up you will need to take care that there is no water inside. Water can enter the kayak through the tubes used for inflation or simply from condensation. Moisture inside the material will allow mildew and mold to grow and if you store it somewhere that the temperature falls below freezing the continual freezing and thawing of the water will cause damage.

The best way to remove all the water is to use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. A local car wash will have one if you don’t! Suck put all the moisture before you store it away or roll it up. Many people deflate their kayaks, roll them up and stick them in a cupboard without taking proper care. They may think they’ll be getting them out again soon and months go by, in the meantime that moisture insise is causing problem. Make sure after every trip that your kayak is completely dry before putting it away just in case a few days storage becomes rather longer.

Inflating Your Kayak

Properly inflating your kayak is essential as over-inflation can cause strain on the seams and under inflation will have a sever impact on performance. Once it is properly inflated you may need still need to do some adjustment as the air inside will contract when you put it into cold water or may expand if you leave it in the sun. This is not so much a problem with better quality boats that have an inner air bladder but leaving your boat in the sun is definitely not a good idea

Protectants and Cleaning

Do not use any harsh cleaners as these will damage the material. Water is adequate. if you must use soap thoroughly rinse it off afterwards. A protectant is necessary, apply once a year. Use one specially made for kayaks which you can buy from a marine supply store. Do not use a protectant made for cars such as Armor All.
